What is recycled polyester made from?
Recycled polyester is a type of synthetic fibre that is made from recycled materials, such as used plastic bottles, industrial plastic waste, and abandoned textiles. The recycling process involves collecting and sorting the used plastic materials, shredding them into small flakes, and melting them down into a viscous liquid. This liquid is then extruded through a spinneret (a device similar to a showerhead) to create thin strands of polymer, which are cooled and drawn out into fibres. These fibres are then spun into yarn and woven or knitted into fabrics.
Recycled polyester has several benefits compared to virgin (i.e., newly produced) polyester. It uses less energy and water to produce, and it generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions. It also diverts plastic waste from landfills and helps to reduce the demand for new raw materials.
